The economy

Well, today's news is better. The rate at which the economy is shedding jobs has dropped. The jobless rate has dropped--probably due to the number of people dropping out of the job search exceeding the number of people losing their jobs. The economy needs to start adding jobs before the number of people employed will grow, and it needs to add jobs at a rate greater than the number of new entrants added to the work force in order to increase the percent employed.

It's not the end of the issue. It may only be slight change from a relentlessly downward track, but it's gone on enough to let it be a trend. I am hoping that it continues.

So tired.

Two more accounts, and two more passwords. How annoying.

One account that is pretty much defunct, but not close-able. Sigh.

Computers are *hard*.

Work

The science pipeline looks like this.

"The overall proportion of high school graduates who earn bachelor's degrees in STEM fields has remained constant at 8 to 10% from 1972 to 2005, the study finds...About half of STEM graduates find employment in STEM fields, and about half of those remain in STEM to the mid-career level...'Sizable proportions of people end up not doing what they were trained for,' [B. Lindsay] Lowell said. " B. Lindsay Lowell is the director of policy studies at Georgetown University.  This is from Chemical and Engineering News, Nov. 2, 2009.

Now, remember STEM includes computer hardware and software. Although those fields are not strong at the moment, they have been strong in the period considered.

I went to LinkedIn again today. Sigh. I really love the way it is so easy to set up multiple profiles for yourself accidentally. I am linked to several iterations of the same people.

I feel very self-conscious when passing out my business card. But if life is about who you know, the more people that remember that they know me the better! So I will keep on passing them out.

On to the seekers

A highly skilled Jack-of-all-trades in Chicago. Office manager or personal assistant.

A PeopleSoft developer in Northern VA.

A health researcher with expertise in physical therapy in Montgomery County, MD.

A scientist and educator in Montgomery County, MD.

An Oracle developer, DBA and computer librarian in Montgomery County, MD.

Will add people from the comments.

Emily is having too much homework. First grade is pretty hard, especially in the advanced math class.

I now have a ton of work. Good for the money, bad for time with [livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie .

I'm a little sad in many ways.

Several people I know are mourning the loss of an SCA fighter to H1N1.

I yelled at my daughter today. Our disagreement just kept escalating.

[livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie 's plane doesn't get in until 12:30 tonight. He'll be exhausted.

My studying time was spent on tasks for my PTA committee. I won't get that back.

I was afraid that I had overstepped the levels of privacy appropriate for a blog in my comments on another person's blog.

I got a rejection from the job I applied to. I know it was a long shot, but it's still a rejection.

Our oven is still broken. It's just a low-level background annoyance.

LinkedIN

Hey, I now know why my number of third-degree connections dropped so much. Two of my first-degree connections made it impossible to browse their connections. That's fine, they are entitled to do that.

I should put my volunteer work on my profile in an organized fashion. I know that it is the sign of not having a lot of paid work experience. But my profile shows that fact in other ways also, so what is the point of hiding it?

Find books about the area that we are visiting that are close to Emily's reading level. Keep on reading to her and finding new books for her to be read. Have patience, and then more patience. That's the really hard part.

I've got a lot to do today with teaching. I'm trying to cover way too much for three hours.

[livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie cut out a huge bit of drywall. He will be calling the plumber in the morning. Emily and I will be home when he comes.

We need to get to sleep tonight. The goal should be to stay on the same schedule.

I need to be sure that I am prepared for tomorrow's tutoring.

I can't wait for school to start. I've got plenty of plans while Emily is busy.

So tired.

I'm back from teaching. Must prepare timesheet and submit.

The swine flu (H1N1) vaccine is in clinical trials. Everyone, get your seasonal flu vaccine ASAP to clear the decks for the H1N1. They ARE planning on two doses, probably with adjuvant.

Reading & preparing Cell Biology and questions for tutoring tomorrow. Putting blank paper into my bag, so I have it tomorrow. Printing another copy of a paper I need.

Double-checking my to-do list. I'm not at the stage where I trust it yet.

Much of the math is done. The microwave is pretty clean.

Emily has done at least 4 activities for her summer homework.

I have decided that we should make a model of the totem pole in modeling clay before trying to achieve anything (except stripping down) with the actual wood.

Bummer

I can't cross anything off of my todo list yet.

Plus I may have to add more to the old todo list.

I used the trick that [livejournal.com profile] starstraf 's sweetie suggested. I sawed until it was really close to coming off. [livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie took it down for me.

I am trying to work and list all the possible topics for my tutorial that starts tomorrow. Maybe I'll be done by midnight.

More work.

I've got more work. I am mostly happy about this, but there is a lot of preparation work suddenly on my plate.

I've got tons of papers that have to get to their proper owners all signed, sealed and delivered. My work, Emily's school, my school (Spanish class)...

My daughter has EXTREMELY good hearing. I whispered something to [livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie half a room away. She knew all about it. Fortunately, computer passwords (except her own) baffle her. I often joke that she has hearing in the 99 percentile.
petmoosie: (braids)
I am mostly ready for tomorrow. I have printed out a vast array of papers that are only sort of important. Apparently, my employer has both a sexual abuse policy and a sexual harassment policy. After reading too much, I know that my employer is against both.

And for some reason, my left wrist hurts. For some other reason, my spouse won't take over all the going-to-sleep parental duties tonight.

"Hands-free" doesn't help. It's the amount to which the conversation engages the mind.

I am supposed to call if I am going to be late, with an estimate of how late I will be. I am supposed to call all the students as well as the office. I can't imagine pulling over to call if there is a traffic jam. Plus, pulling over is somewhat dangerous to begin with. Fortunately, I have never been late while driving (once while on the Metro). But with pulling over and calling all those people, I would be adding at least 15 minutes to the amount that I am late. I guess that this policy only works if you are going to be at least a certain amount late.

Yes, I have called and wound up on time once. That was with the Metro also.
petmoosie: (bad guy)
And it frustrates me.

America is not experiencing a shortage of scientists or engineers, yet we hear calls to educate more people in science and engineering. We don't have jobs for all the scientists and engineers that we do educate, and we aren't willing to retrain them in general. So the mismatch between trained scientists and engineers and the job market in their logical fields is huge, even in the boom times. In the bust times, the mismatch is just ridiculous.

petmoosie: (braids)
But all I want to do is get on the computer.

Although our local newspaper is making a case for Maryland catching up to CA and MA in biotech, it's not quite correct. It's leaving out NJ/PA/DE, which is a good-sized cluster--just not in a single state for classification purposes. MD is commonly considered to rank 4th, and a fairly distant 4th.

Sigh.
petmoosie: (dc)
First of all, I am going to work. I'm trying to increase my hours/earnings this year. I have two classes and a tutoring student.

Emily has one camp in July. It's actually 9am-5pm, which is really long for a camp or for a 1rst grade child.

There is a Bible camp in August. I have been doing a lot of preparation for this, with the certification for a volunteer to work with children.

We are going to the beach in July. i will be there for three days and T and Emily have the whole week.

We need to start going to the pool. As soon as both Emily and I are non-contagious. Also, going to a few museums and having a few playdates. i don't feel right about calling yet, since I'm not well yet.
