My face itches on the right side and my gums on that side are bleeding easily. I don't know if that is a side effect of the Lyme or of the medication. I suspect the medication, since it is known to have skin effects.

I had a ton of Spanish homework and I didn't get it done by class tonight. The grammar I was able to fake (well, this is the third or fourth time we've done similar grammar). The essay I took a pass on. The opinion I did off the cuff and it was actually really good.

I found an interesting article to take to Spanish class tonight. It is about the discovery of prehistoric bacteria in a cave in Mexico. From the build-up, they are supposed to be anaerobic (from the time before O2 was plentiful from photosynthesis).

Happy geek dance.

I really am. Hooray!!!

At this rate, I may be able to do all Wednesday's scheduled things on Friday.

I found a blog that I am enjoying called "Facts Are Strictly Optional".

I get distracted easily. Good thing I'm not managing a nuclear reactor.

I am also listening to news in another language. When will I learn that it just confuses me (more)?

[livejournal.com profile] starstraf and I met up at the National Geographic Building. The main exhibit area is being prepared for Terra-Cotta warriors. But there was a selection of "best of" pictures outside and a slew of gorgeous polar pictures inside. Especially pictures of polar animals, such as seals, penguins, polar bears, and others.

I have a bunch of Spanish to do for tonight. But I was amused by this week's Medical Spanish podcast, "STD symptoms in men". I think I can guess what next week's Medical Spanish podcast will be, """""in women".

I need to listen to the news in English as well as Spanish. I just don't understand enough to figure out an informed opinion in Spanish.

Sigh, I don't have the time for that.

Sigh, so I guess I will continue to be ill-informed for at least the rest of the calender year.

I used my lightbox for 20 minutes this morning. OK, maybe I lost track of time and it was an hour. I am totally revved up. I have a ton of things to do for my PTA committee and some of the information I need is in Yahoo! mail. Mail is acting slow, plus I have a ton of messages that I *could* respond to (mostly having to do with that same committee).

My brain keeps firing up things for me to do. I have a category in my "things" (a todo list) called public health. It seems to include advising people to get the flu vaccine, figure out whether someone should get the nasal vaccine or the shot, and telling people that flu parties are one of the dumbest ideas out there. It also includes donating blood, but that requires sitting still.

Unfortunately for me, I can't listen to podcasts (especially not Spanish) very well in this hyper state. Or study.

I can't do any more on the weekends of Sept. 26-27 or Oct. 3-4. The world needs to stop sending me invitations for those days.

I'm actually feeling pretty good about my understanding of Spanish. Last night was a good class.

Emily and [livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie went to the Girl Scout meeting. I couldn't stay for much/any of it really because I had to go to my Spanish class.

My goodness, it's hard. I just don't make myself speak in Spanish enough, so I am rustier than an old nail. On the other hand, my regimen of listening to Spanish nearly every day means that I can almost understand our teacher. And, believe me, some of my fellow students aren't understanding her. Sigh. We'll muddle through somehow. We have one new student and the rest have been together for years, some of us for 4 years at this point. We can be pretty social also.

Done.

I have closed registration for my class(es). There will be three, Spanish level 1, and two sessions of Introductory Spanish. Now to send out the paperwork, and safety information, etc. Sigh. It will all work out.

My doctor will have flu shots on Oct. 6. Flu is widespread in the Southeastern region of the US and isolated states in the Midwest and Southwest. That includes Illinois and Kansas, but not Massachusetts or Missouri. 99% of all Flu cases are H1N1.

Tonight is my first Spanish class of this year.

Pulled some vines. Watered some grass seed (in "lawn"). Chopped some wood.

We (Emily and I) have been getting to school in plenty of time this week. Probably is due to setting the alarm earlier.

Homework went like gangbusters yesterday. She's getting it and getting how to do it efficiently.

Looks like two (2) Introductory Spanish classes this year. Great!!!! Emily is signed up for one of them.

I'm almost afraid to look into my email box.

I got a phone call last night, while tucking Emily in (code for lying with her and talking for about an hour), about the class.

During the mothers' walk home from drop-off at school, there was a discussion about setting up a Spanish-English buddy system for our school.

[livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie convinced me that my Spanish wasn't good enough to be the Spanish liaison for Emily's 1rst grade class. Sigh.

This school year is off to a running start.

Many, many inquiries about the foreign language program.

I seem to be making no progress in Spanish. Sigh. Maybe once I complain here, I will advance again. At least for the next few weeks, I will be listening to it and practicing grammar a few times a day while Emily is at school.

To Dos

I only have 7 weeks until Spanish class starts up again. I am supposed to do some of the grammar exercises, so that I can use the grammar properly. That seems to be one of my limiting factors these days. 3 of those weeks are after Emily goes to school, so probably I will have to wait for then.

Emily has done 10 of the 30 assignments for school. I need to either clear out the kindergarten folder or start a new one for 1rst grade, since I already have papers from the school (for 1rst grade). I think I have some PTA stuff in the papers, that I need to return to the president (just throw over my fence :-) ).

And getting four, finally.

I have been listening to the radio all week on my commute to Emily's camp. Sometimes I listen to the news station, sometimes I listen to the Spanish station. They both play the same ad (although I have heard it more in Spanish). This ad urges you to volunteer for the vaccine clinical trials at NIH. In the advertisement, they mention vaccines for 'gripé'==flu, and 'haiche e ve'==HIV.

The other piece of the puzzle was supplied by the Washington Post this morning. An article on the meeting yesterday to plan for the fall flu season mentioned that tests over the summer are needed to prepare the H1N1 vaccine for use in the fall.

I finally put it together and realized that they are recruiting volunteers for the H1N1 vaccine and just using their generic ad in heavy rotation. So probably no volunteers this summer will get an HIV vaccine candidate or a Lyme disease candidate.

Good day

The sun is finally out.
Emily doesn't need glasses. The test picked up some astigmatism, which will eventually need to be corrected, but it shouldn't be a problem now. It's mild, like T's, and astigmatism doesn't change over your lifespan (unlike near- and far-sightedness).  I brought Emily to school just in time to go to the lunchroom and be the lunch lady (1 of 3). Oh, the kids were full of beans!!! Just very bouncy, interfering with their neighbor, etc.

Last night's Spanish class was awful. I wasn't prepared and wasn't awake enough to follow the teacher. The teacher wasn't too upset with me, though. She was very glad to get some good essays from the rest of the class. I will have to get my essay emailed to her soon.
petmoosie: (bad guy)
I took another nap this morning.
I guess maybe I can sleep through until spring. Alright, probably not. But it certainly is better to be able to sleep, than to be stuck awake.
I have Spanish class tonight.
Tomorrow is Emily's eye doctor appointment. Than, probably this weekend, she and T will look for glasses.
Better get some of my Spanish stuff prepared.
petmoosie: (braids)
Emily stayed up until I got home last night. That, that was a bit of a problem since she had to wake up for Spanish this morning. She took our big (XXL) Obama T-shirt to wipe her tears on, since waking up early was tearful.

T's work is trying to interfere with his vacation plans. I may wind up taking Emily to visit family by myself, with T joining us for a weekend only. I am NOT looking forward to that since Emily is hard to rouse in the mornings (and T is better at it than I am). Of course, his work hasn't quite decided to do this (because they are impaired in the basic skill of making a decision).
petmoosie: (knitting)
We got new books from Amazon today. Emily asked me to read her the one I got on composting: "The Rodale Book of Composting: Easy Methods for Every Gardener". Soon, she was out like a light. I wrapped her up in a blanket, shoes and all.

I didn't think it was that boring. My actual thought is that she is sick, but not having any symptoms other than tiredness.

T is going to bring home things that I forgot to get at the store. I am going to a) do laundry, b) do some of the homework that I am assigning in vast amounts to my students and c) do some small part of the Spanish homework that I have been accumulating. I think she had better sleep for two days. :-)
