I think that the more exposure that a child has to the tricky parts of their environments, the better the child learns to be safe in that environment. Perhaps, this theory needs more work.

I took two rambunctious girls on the Metro to see a museum in downtown DC. I used moral persuasion to get them to sit down only after several stops. It was a quieter time of day, not rush hour, for both the downtown trip and the return trip. I hope that the investment of the effort to corral them teaches them to behave on a train in the future. Someday, i will need to take her at rush hour.

It's not very easy to pack this snow; it's dry and powdery. It crushes down easier. Emily and I walked up the street and played with S. and her dad and a twelve-year-old and her dad. S. went in because her gloves got cold. Emily wanted to persist in trying to build a fort. It just didn't work because the snow would crush down every time. It took a long time to convince her to come home. So now we're a bit cold and trying to make hot chocolate. Well, actually the Virgo in the house is trying to clean up a spill before he will even try to make hot chocolate.

Weather

It is snowing. Wet, slushy snow. It's falling in wet, sloppy, big drops flakes. The ground around here (particularly at Emily's school) is saturated with water, so even when it melts, it has a difficult time draining.

The low tonight is supposed to be 27°F. All that standing water/slush will freeze in interesting shapes and lots of slippery sidewalks. At some point, I will have to dig out the salt to put over the driveway and sidewalk to minimize the slipperiness of our sidewalk.

Emily went to "Breakfast with Santa" this morning, followed by ice skating. Both events were loaded with children who were very happy to see all the snow.

Emily is getting the "self-rescuing princess" shirt from Think Geek.

Now to rescue her at the playground without seeming to. Sigh.

The boys are teasing and chasing the girls and it has gotten bad. Throwing woodchips and chasing with sticks. The parent of the boy that is the ringleader wants to let the kids settle it themselves. But it is not getting settled. Sigh.

I am making stew for dinner tonight. I realized too late that I didn't have an onion, so I used onion powder.

[livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie and Emily are making sock puppets.

When [livejournal.com profile] starstraf and I went to the museum yesterday, there was a field trip there.

I noticed first that there were no boys in the class.

Then I noticed that they spoke Spanish. The teacher could translate from English. Most of the girls could also speak and read English, but if it got confusing, they went to Spanish.

Then I noticed that they were spending a long time discussing vaccinations.

Then I noticed that they were talking about what vaccines children need. Young children. And about vaccines required to enroll children in school.

Then I looked at some of the girls' midsections. Some of them definitely *could* be pregnant.

Then I heard the museum tour director ask the girls if their children were born yet. Actually the way she asked it, was are they on the inside or the outside?

So, the conclusion to draw is that the field trip was from the school for pregnant girls. Right?

PS. I am giving myself major points for understanding most of the translations.

I came home from teaching last night to a computer loaded with pictures of the Millennium Falcon. Emily and [livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie printed out a floor plan, and we had to look for the bathroom (it's there) and the chatting room (not to be confused with the chat room). Emily fell asleep minutes after putting the floor plan on the nightstand.

Yesterday, while 4 to 5 children were raking my front yard, there were shouts of "Mouse, mouse". I went over to check it out. It was a mole. Quite small, maybe 2 to 2.5 inches long, a little squished-looking, probably not even 0.5 inches at max distance from the ground and 1 inch wide. It wasn't "fat", but more widely splayed hips.

It had a little snout. It was dark brown in color with short dense fur. It stuck close to the ground and scurried to get away from the party of children examining it. It eventually got under the leaves that had not been raked yet and got away from the children.

Emily's school had an open house today. Since the federal government has the day off, it's easy to schedule a day for parents to visit at the school. It's not that every parent works for the federal government, but they do set the agenda around here.

It was reading time for first grade. First the children had a warm-up with the words of the week. Then they had independent reading time. So they grabbed a parent (not necessarily their own) and read to them. I listened to four different children read (one of which was Emily). Then the children sat on the carpet for word work. They went over those five words and then words with 'it' in them. They also learned about homonyms, since pit has two meanings (and something else, but I can't remember). Then they each had an assignment to work on at their desk. Emily's was to read a narrative book and summarize the plot in three points. Emily tried "Wilber wins a prize", a separated chapter from Charlotte's web, but it was too hard for her. She then found "Little Louie, the Late Bloomer", which was hard (she kept reading bloomer as brother for the sense of the story), but doable. Then she wrote some of the information. Then her small group was called for a small lesson in "parts of a book (text features)", like the table of contents, chapter headings, and the index. Then she finished her page about Little Louie, the Late Bloomer, Then it was time to get ready for recess.

Those few parents who had hung out that long, went out to the playground with the first grade. After the recess, the parents headed home.

Edited to remove actual reading levels of other children for their privacy.

Emily is taking a bath, and I hope that the smell of turkey grease will be gone forever at that point. At least until Thanksgiving.

My sister pointed me to a website that is dedicated to using composting to reduce methane emissions from landfills.

I have finally had an idea for Emily's birthday (that does not involve cleaning up our house, which is important).

I received the wrong email in connection with my PTA committee. I am hoping for the right one on Monday, since it would be highly useful to know that information by Tuesday at 7:40am.

I'm a little sad in many ways.

Several people I know are mourning the loss of an SCA fighter to H1N1.

I yelled at my daughter today. Our disagreement just kept escalating.

[livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie 's plane doesn't get in until 12:30 tonight. He'll be exhausted.

My studying time was spent on tasks for my PTA committee. I won't get that back.

I was afraid that I had overstepped the levels of privacy appropriate for a blog in my comments on another person's blog.

I got a rejection from the job I applied to. I know it was a long shot, but it's still a rejection.

Our oven is still broken. It's just a low-level background annoyance.

Grump, grump.[livejournal.com profile] mrmoosieis refusing to use the phone. What a wimp!

Emily was bouncing gracelessly into various things all day. Breaking a few of them. Sigh. She would not calm down her energy or use caution to express it where there was no danger.

Beyond the goal of teaching the curriculum. Is there a set of actions that we want all children to have experienced? Are there values that we want to share?

Another blog was talking about overnight field trips (8th grade). Those are boondoggles from one point of view (particularly here). We have all the resources to provide everything locally with no need for an overnight trip.

On the other hand, an overnight trip provides a world of experiences that are unique to the experience of having an overnight trip with your classmates.

The technical difficulties were pretty severe, so they only *saw*, not *heard* the speech. I'm not sure that it was worth it for them.

That's all.

Would it be too cruel to leave the house and leave [livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie (who is very tired) to Emily's mercy?
petmoosie: (Emily)
But, on the other hand, I slept really well last night.

[livejournal.com profile] mrmoosie got another fast-driving award. I'm trying to pay the fine this morning.

Somehow chasing my daughter around the house trying to grab a pillow from her isn't as engaging for me as it is for her. Plus, I see what a mess my house is. On the other hand, it is exercise.

We have to get her to finish her summer packet soon; this week would be preferable. She wins an ice cream social for completing it.

And a slightly shorter way to Cantler's. Emily fed the ducks with crab gills she saved from dinner.

The totem pole has been left in a dangerous--ish state. One heavy limb is one-half sawed-through. I will have to finish that very, very soon. [livejournal.com profile] starstraf 's sweetie needs his own LJ id suggested a way to cut it quickly.

We are dining out with [livejournal.com profile] starstraf , her sweetie, and P and E.

Yummy, long drive.

Emily has a dangerously loose tooth. We will need to bring some sort of container for it, if it comes out at dinner.
