A study from NASA of the heat island effect. Note how powerful even small trees isolated in their own tree island are at lowering the immediate temperatures. Wow.
Heck, who needed a study to tell them that? I've known for a few years now that if I walk over to about 30 yards from the trees by the soccer practice area that there will be a nice cool "breeze" (as in it doesn't really "blow", but you can feel the cool air appear to move). And that's noticable even before you hit the shade line most days. (very useful to know if you plan to hang around - the parking lot gets no shade)
I assume that with a study, people will be more inclined to plant those trees in the median, even though there isn't enough density to get a forest and you have to deal with broken branches falling on the street.
Now there are numbers to assign to the "benefit" of the cost-benefit analysis.
