He did relocate once, and that's because the hospital where he worked closed, so he got a job in a different town in the same state. His title changed from lab technologist to microbiologist at the next hospital, but his job was essentially the same. Actually more specialized at the new hospital, because he didn't need to do his own phlebotomy.

I also got the feeling that technologists are more permanent than technicians, since technologists require more education. I think there's also a market for temp technicians that fill in during busy seasons or specific projects.
