I was introduced to LinkedIn almost two years ago (Jan. of 2006). It's got some great elements.
Finding people that you went to school with is pretty easy.
Finding people that you worked with, requires that all the people agree on the name of their employer. Somewhat tricky, I've found NIH coworkers all over the place. They will list by the full name of the institute, the initials of the institute, NIH or National Institutes of Health (or some combination). There are 31 institutes and more Centers (that can listed separately).
I found the NU alumni group fairly early on (by emailing LinkedIn tech support, not the way it *should* have to be). I have been passing the link to other NUers as I find them. I may drill down a level also if I find myself motivated and having the computer time.
I have 82 direct connections, 1600+ second degree connections, and 221,500+ third degree connections. 3,800+ of my connections are in the biotech industry. I wish it would let me report on three industries, instead of just the one that I belong to.
There are 102 people in the NU alumni group. There *should* be a lot more.
I belong to the AskLizRyan group. It's a networking and job-hunting group. It also has a YahooGroup associated with it. I find it motivating sometimes.
I intend to start job-hunting for myself before/in the fall when Emily starts Kindergarten.
