I'm almost afraid to look into my email box.

I got a phone call last night, while tucking Emily in (code for lying with her and talking for about an hour), about the class.

During the mothers' walk home from drop-off at school, there was a discussion about setting up a Spanish-English buddy system for our school.

mrmoosie convinced me that my Spanish wasn't good enough to be the Spanish liaison for Emily's 1rst grade class. Sigh.

Maybe not to be an official liaison... but the school would probably *love* to know that you have half-decent skills and could help out if they were desperate.

One of the schools I was in before had two people who spoke limited Spanish on the staff... guess what happened several days that neither was in. Yup... a kid with Spanish-only-speaking parents managed to miss a bus, or in one case didn't get off the bus at the right stop, and being a kindergartner, the bus driver couldn't figure out what stop and loop back, so had to drop him back at the school... which then had to figure out how to get the message across to the parents (about 3 phone calls later - through a parent who had both cell and landline who could do limited translation to the child's parent on the second line).

The PTA president is working really hard to codify the Spanish/English spoken here into two groups: translation/interpretation and liaison. I don't know where she is going after that. But there are definitely a lot of resources that have been put here and only *sort of* used.

Most of the people in the liaison positions are native-Spanish and working on English, right now as of the middle of September. The organization has been in progress most of the summer.
