Maybe not to be an official liaison... but the school would probably *love* to know that you have half-decent skills and could help out if they were desperate.

One of the schools I was in before had two people who spoke limited Spanish on the staff... guess what happened several days that neither was in. Yup... a kid with Spanish-only-speaking parents managed to miss a bus, or in one case didn't get off the bus at the right stop, and being a kindergartner, the bus driver couldn't figure out what stop and loop back, so had to drop him back at the school... which then had to figure out how to get the message across to the parents (about 3 phone calls later - through a parent who had both cell and landline who could do limited translation to the child's parent on the second line).
