Diagon Alley

Borders, I mean Flourish and Blotts, got some of the other stores on Ellsworth Avenue to relabel themselves for the night last night.

Ben and Jerry's became Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor and put up signs "Wanted Bellatrix Lestrange"

McGinty's Irish Pub became Ye Leake Cauldron.

The whole street was crowded. And there were a few serious cases of drunkenness. The police were out in force.

The crowd was very diverse; Hispanic, Indian, black and white. I was surprised. I remember the science fiction crowd being very, very white. Of course, most of the people were younger than me.

There was a man with a stroller and a humongous number of children. I wonder if he borrowed a few.

We didn't stay long; too crowded, too drunk, and too late for Emily

The whole point, culturally, of Harry Potter is that the Harry Potter crowd is not the science fiction crowd.

I guess I missed it

I was introduced to HP by fen, so I didn't really notice the difference. Even the last book was a bit more like the parts of a con that *I* go to. I fairly rarely go to room parties and I'm not really a drinker or a late night person.

Some of the extra people are there because it is the last book.

I got Ellen to read Fellowship of the Ring and see the movie. So I think I thought that some strands of science fiction were becoming more popular.

I mean even the party for book #6 was more like a con than this party.

Whereas I haven't had much contact with fandom the past 10 years or so. I also don't read HP; but, from what I've heard, it spread primarily via the conventional media, not via fandom.
