My husband recently explained to me that "drinking the Kool-Aid" was an explicit reference to the Guyana mass suicide. I did not know that; I thought it was a spontaneous expression from Silicon Valley.  I will use it a LOT less now.

And the ironic thing is that it wasn't even Kool Aid. It was some other brand.

I find it all too appropriate all too often to refer to uncritical acceptance of an unwise plan.

yes that is the refrence - it is often used in situations where everyone agrees without reasoning or thought - they have 'drunk the koolaid'
